Tip: How to soften brown sugar

There's nothing more aggravating than getting ready to bake and realizing that your brown sugar has hardened and it's filled with hard clumps. As you scrape at it, some of it ends up flying everywhere and you regret ever having started this project in the first place. The next time this happens to you, try this neat trick. Simply pop your brown sugar container into the microwave and heat it up for about 30 seconds on High. The heat will cause the molasses in the brown sugar to soften, which will in turn make the brown sugar smooth again! It's fast and it works every time!

  1. That's a good option, but you can also buy small terracotta discs at any kitchen supply store. What you do is soak them in water for 15 minutes...then pat them dry....and plop them into your brown sugar container.....the terracotta holds in moisture and so can 'revive' your brown sugar in a matter of hours. Of course this is not for immediate use...but if you plan to use your sugar in the upcoming days, getting these rounds helps a lot. I have 3 in my container and they are miracle workers! I put them in over 3 months ago and my sugar is still soft and loose.

  2. What we do in our case is simply put a wet dish towel over the brown sugar container and wait until the brown sugar gets humid again. Also not for immediate use, but works well.
